DP World Chennai inducts 4 RTGs at Chennai terminal

DP World Chennai, part of the Dubai-based DP World, has inducted four new Rubber Tyre Gantry (RTGs) at the Chennai container terminal. The new RTGs costing Rs 38 crore was procured from Gulf Port Cranes, Abu Dhabi. Mr Ennarasu Karnuesan, CEO, DP World Chennai, said the terminal is gearing up to handle around 1.30 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) this calendar year.
The new RTGs will ensure that the trailers and vessels are turned around in the quickest possible time. The terminal already has a fleet of 24 RTGs, including some older ones. Vertically, the new equipment is capable of reaching a stacking high of six containers.

Cooking oils import nearly trebles in Feb 2008

A tendency to buy more in order to hedge against sharp rise in prices led to cooking oil imports almost trebling during February. According to the Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA), edible oil imports increased to 4.31 lakh tonnes (lt) against 1.51 lt during the same period a year ago.
The rise in edible oil imports when prices were ruling high in the global markets has also caught the industry by surprise.

China Eastern Airlines to enhance frequency on Delhi Sector

China Eastern Airlines has announced the commencement of its fifth flight out of Delhi. The new flight will commence, with effect from April 6, 2008. The announcement of the new flight is reflective of the significant growth in passenger traffic from Delhi to Beijing, the capital city of China as well as Shanghai – a city widely regarded as the citadel of China's modern economy. For customers, the new flight reinforces the need to have convenient travel options that can save them time and effort.

Export of Iron Ore exceeds domestic Consumption in 2006-07


During the year 2006-07, domestic steel industry consumed about 68.504 million tonne of iron ore (Estimated), whereas 93.79 million tonne of iron ore was exported (Provisional). Government has been receiving pleas from some sectors especially steel manufacturers for regulating the export of iron ore.

Government of India has imposed an export duty of Rs. 300/- per tonne on export of all varieties of Lumps and on export of iron ore fines having Fe content more than 62%. Export duty of Rs. 50/- per tonne has been imposed on iron ore fines having Fe content 62% and below. This information was given by the Minister of State for Steel, Dr. Akhilesh Das in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

AI launches its first Freighter service

Mumbai, 27th June 2007: At a press conference held today, Shri. Praful Patel, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, flagged-off Air India’s first dedicated freighter aircraft to Europe.

The first converted aircraft (Passenger to Cargo A310) deployed on the Europe route (Bombay/Bangalore/Damam/Frankfurt/Damam/Bombay), has begun operations from today. The freighter A 310 aircraft will make four trips in a week via Bangalore and Chennai to Frankfurt and Paris.


Speaking at the occasion, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Shri. Praful Patel said, “This is a major milestone achieved not only in Air India’s history, but also in the history of Indian civil aviation. Cargo is one of the key components of the nation’s economic growth. Our vision is to
make Air India a preferred cargo carrier in the year’s to come, and to this end I assure that the government will provide its full support.”


Air India’s current market share in the export segment is in the range of 9-11% and 5-7% in the import segment. Owing to the upsurge in the import-export demand coined with the Open Sky Policy and globalization factors, Air India has decided to ramp-up cargo operations.

Addressing the media on the occasion of the launch, Chairman and Managing Director, Air India,
Mr.V.Thulasidas said, “Post the merger, the cargo is going to be one of the most important strategic business units for Air India. Our vision is to see a full fledged Air India cargo airline and I thank each and every employee of Air India cargo who has worked hard to shape this dream into reality.”

Monsoon Situation prevailing at Colombo

Owing to monsoonic weather conditions prevailing in Colombo for the last 4 Days, Feeder Vessels are facing severe berthing / sailing delay. This inturn has created a vacuum in Chennai. Also, the Colombo port productivity, with regard to mother vessels has come down & in some cases
Mother vessels have decided to skip Colombo, in order to maintain their schedule.This situation is expected to persist till end of next week.

As a result, shipment transhipping at Colombo are delayed.

JET-SAHARA DEAL

India's Jet Airways has acquired Air Sahara and christened it as "Jetlite". This is the second merger in the country's aviation industry after the two state owned carriers Indian Airlines and Air India annonced their meger recently and will be re-named as "Air India"

Jet Airways also planning an international expansion by adding 20 wide bodied aircrafts and start daily services to New York via Brussels from August 2007. Service to San Francisco (via Shanghai) will be starting from the year end.

Brussels will the European hub for Jet Airways.

AIR MAURITIUS TO FLY TO BANGALORE

Bangalore will be the next destination in India for Air Mauritius which is already flying to Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Mauritius-Bangalore direct flight will be launched from Mid of 2008.

DAL SERVICE FROM INDIA

DAL Deutsche Afrika-Linien, the Hamburg-based shipping line has entered the Indian market with a premium product as part of the NEMO service to Europe. DAL will participate as a vessel operator in the service, under a vessel sharing agreement with CMA CGM.

DAL will start with Chennai. A direct main line service from Chennai to the ports of Djibouti, Jeddah, Damietta, La Spezia, Tilbury, Hamburg, Rotterdam and Le Havre. This service will bring relief to the Chennai export trade from the uncertainty of rollovers and shut outs of cargo at transhipment ports.

In addition to the direct ports of call, DAL will also cover other European and African destinations.

PAK SHIPS CALLING INDIAN PORT

Pakistan ships have started calling at Indian ports after over 30 years. The tanker m.v. Lalazar recently discharged 92,000 tonnes of crude at New Mangalore Port, while another vessel m.v. Bolan discharged general cargo at Bedi port in Gujarat. This follows the signing of the amended shipping protocol between the two countries.

ETIHAD DOUBLES INDIA FLIGHTS

UAE's national carrier Etihad Airways is all set to expand its services to Indiaby launching two new destinations - Kochi & Thiruvananthapuram. The flight will begin from Abu Dhabi to Thiruvananthapuram on May 31st and to Kochi by June 31. Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi joins Etihad's services after Mumbai and Delhi. Etihad operates freighter flights to Chennai already.

DOHA-CHENNAI-DOHA DAILY SERVICE BY QR

Qatar Airways has launched its daily Doha-Chennai-Doha PAX service as part of its expansion programme comprising new routes and enhancing frequencies to India. The Airline has already serving Chennai with its Freighter service.

Chennai is the sixth destination for the airline which already operates to Delhi Hyderabad, Mumbai, Trivandrum and Cochin. The Airline is looing to start operations from Nagpur Airport.

ETIHAD'S TRIVANDRUM SERVICE

UAE Based Etihad will be commencing its PAX operation from Abu Dhabi to Trivandrum and
Cochin. The tri-weekly Trivandrum service will be started from May 31st while Cochin frequency will be four days and will be from June 3rd.

Etihad has already service Delhi and Mumbai thru PAX and Freighter while Chennai is connected with Freighter service only.

AIR INDIA EXPRESS

The Air India Express, a subsidiary of Air India, launched direct PAX flights from Tiruchy to Dubai and Singapore. Flights would be operated from Tiruchy to both destinations on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

AIR ARABIA WILL FLY TO AHMEDABAD

The first low-fare airline in the Middle East, Air Arabia will be starting daily flights to Ahmedabad from April 2007. Ahmedabad has one of the major industrial towns in the North-West.

MUNDRA PORT ADDS HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE

Mundra Port and SEZ Ltd and Sterling Add Life have sighned a memorandum of understanding for
developing healthcare-related infrastructure at all sector Special Economic Zones (SEZ) which
has a seport as well as an airport.

CMA-CGM's "Vasco Express" started Service

CMA-CGM has started a new service called "Vasco Express Service" linking South America with India, Gulf, Read Sea and South Africa.

The weekly service with 8 vessels will connect Rio-de-Janerio, Santos, Paranagua, Itajai, Rio Grande, Salalah, Khorfakkan, NHAVA SHEVA, Port Louis, Durban and back Rio-de-Janerio. Transit time will be 20 days between Rio and Khorfakkan.

The Vessels will have 1700 TEU and a reefer capacity of 350 Plugs. With this service, CMA-CGM can meet the growing market demand for refrigerated containers.

Mumbai to get its second airport

The Government has proposed a second airport in Mumbai which would come up by 2012.
The new airport will have a capacity to handle aprox 55 million passengers annually. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) had already said to have given techno-feasibility clearance to the Navi Mumbai airport.

Nagpur Airport

Singapore-based Changi airport is going to be the consultant for developming an International Cargo Hub and Airport Project (MIHAN) in Nagpur - Near Mumbai. The MIHAN project will include an airport, a SEZ and a rail and road terminal

The Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd (MADC) which is developing MIHAN project recently signed an MoU with Changi Airport authorities. Once fully developed, the airport will have space for 50 aircraft and 50 more on the fringe areas.

The airport will have a maintenance repairs and overhaul (MRO) base for which the MADC has signed a MoU with Boeing, which will be setting up their MRO for South Asia at Nagpur with investment of $100 million.

FREIGHTER'S FOR AIR INDIA

Air India is planning to have freighter service ex Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai in the near future with two A310 aircrafts. Air India is also looking to convert its eight A310 aircrafts and five B737-200 aircrafts into freighter. More over the airline is planning to lease some more aircrafts for cargo opertions.

The carrier has taken around six acres of land near New Bangalore International Airport to facilitate more services from Bangalore to the West.

Gulf Air's New Cargo Connection

Gulf Air Cargo will be operating chartered flights on Bahrain-Chennai-Bangalore-Amsterdam sector
for a 3 month period temporerly and later it will be reviewed. The airline will operate an Airbus A-300
aircraft with a capacity of 40 tonnes twise a week.

DP WORLD BRINGS IDX SERVICE TO COCHIN PORT

Cochin Port has added another International Service called IDX which connects India with US East Coast on every week from 06th Jan 2007.

The Port rotation will be Colombo-Tuticorin-Cochin-Nhava Sheva-Mundra-Barcelona-New York-Norfolk-Charleston. There will be eight vessels plying around with 2800 TEU capacity. This will be operated by a consotium consisting of Zim, SCI, Emirates, OOCL and Italia Maritima.

REVISED SHIPPING PROTOCOL FOR INDIA & PAKISTAN

India and Pakistan have signed a revised shipping protocol to allow flagships of both countries to carry third country cargo from each others ports.

Revised protocol has been signed by shipping ministers of the two countries in New Delhi on 14/12/06. The revised shipping protocol between India and Pakistan will allow lifting of cargo between the two countries by third country vessels as well as lifting of third country cargo by India and Pakistani flag vessels from each others’ ports,” according to a government official. This is expected to enhance tonnage under both the flags and also result in competitive shipping rates.

QATAR AIRWAYS TO FLY PAX TO CHENNAI (MAA) & AHMEDABAD (AMD)

Qatar Airways announced expansion of its services to India by adding Chennai and Ahmedabad from March-April next year to five Indian cities from where it operates and raising frequencies on some existing routes by almost 60 per cent.

From our existing 30 frequencies each week, we are now operating 42 frequencies till January 31. This will go up to 49 from next summer", airline CEO Akbar al Baker told reporters here. He also announced plans to introduce a passenger service to Nagpur from the middle of 2007 and a twice-weekly freighter service around the same time.

Baker said the plans from Doha to Nagpur, where it was supposed to launch flights from this year, were delayed due to delay in supplies of aircraft. Airbus A-321s would be operating on these routes.

QR is already flying freighters to Chennai and the PAX service will increase cargo capacity

CORPORATES KEEN TO ENTER PORT SECTOIR

INDIA Inc - an even larger number of reputed companies in India have evinced interest in developing the existing ports.

Adani group, GVK Industries ABG Shipyard, Larsen & Toubro, Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, IL&FS, Sanghi group, Container Corporation of India, Continental Warehousing Corporation, Nirma group and Sterling Biotech Limited just to name a few are eyeing for the six existing ports that Gujarat government wants to upgrade with private participation.

Adanis want to develop Porbander and Navlakhi, GVK has shown interest in all six projects. ABG has set its eyes on Magdalla, IL&FS keen on Dahej, Magdalla and Navlakhi.

Apart from above companies, players such as Zoom Realty Projects, Navyug Engineering, Sanex International, Arya Offshore Services, Mangaldas Kapadia & Sons and United Shippers amongst others too have submitted EoIs for one or the other port.

Increase in Export of Black Pepper to USA

There is an increase of 80.12 percent in Exports of Black pepper to the USA for the period of January to Septermer 2006. A Subsidy scheme introducd in November 2005 helped the boost of exports. An Ocean freight subsidy was also given.

Production and Export is Booming

Production of almost all commodities is booming in India which is resulting a steady growth in Air Export. Government is expecting around 10 percent annual gains over next 10 years time.

Carriers like Lufthansa Cargo, Air France, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air are incresing their cago lifting capacity often. More new sectors are covered with direct flights. Airports modernisation works are being done at major airports line Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai and new airports are coming up in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Mainline Vessel from Cochin

Emirates Shipping Line has started it's direct Mainline Vessel from Cochin to Gulf and mainline China to boost direct trade in between these sectors. The mainline service with average 3000 TEU carrying capacity will be calling at Cochin port twice a week.

Air France Started Direct Flights to Chennai

Air France which is currently operating to Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore added Chennai for their passenger traffic from OCT 31’ 2006. This has also increased cargo capacity of the carrier which is already having freighter service ex Chennai. AF has a plan to increase the services to five times a week from 2007 Summer Season.

Coir Industry in Tamil Nadu

The State Coir Board is planning to set up an industrial park for producing geo-textile based products in Pollachi, in Western Tamil Nadu. Infrastructure and eco-friendliness gaining momentaum, the demand for geo-textiles is on the rise. With a good export market, industry plans for more value added products sucha as ice cream cups mde out of coconut shells, floral baskets and home decor items for export and domestic market as well with grants of excise duty exemption for manufacturing of coir composite boards, coir matting boards and coir boards.

Air France expansion

Air France which is currently operating to Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore is adding Chennai for their passenger traffic. This will gift three flights to Chennai from OCT 31’ 2006. AF has a plan to increase the services to five times a week from 2007 Summer Season.The Carrier will increase it’s flights from 5 to 7 a week from Bangalore and also more seats from Mumbai.

Strike at ICD Delhi has been called off on 9th Ocotber'06.

STRIKE AT ICD, TUGLAKABAD, DELHI

A strike has been called by Customs Brokers due death of a 35 year old Customs broker at ICD, Delhi by an accident inside the ICD. All operational activities comes to a stadstill in the ICD for last 36
hours.

All agencies operating from ICD TKD (Surveyors, Transporters CHA's and Customs) are on strike for indefinite period.

As per the recent information received there is no working at ICD TKD, resulting in non movement of loaded export containers for railment, empty reposition to other ICDs and vice versa for imports.


FIRST MAINLINE VESSEL AT COCHIN PORT

M.v Ville De Mars, the first main line container vessel arrived at Cochin Port on 15th Sep 06 which was a mile stone for the Cochin Port. This is the first time a Mother Vessel arrived at Cochin port giving a major boost to the Port's efforts to become a gateway to the India.

Cochin Port has recently achieved "Deep Draft Port" enabling bigger vessel to take berth and the arrival of M.v. Ville De Mars is the first response to the promotional efforts made by the Cochin Port.

The operation of mainline vessels from Cochin can save time and money to the Exporters and Importers from the entire Kerala and major Industrial towns of Tamil Nadu such as Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Karur, Pollachi, Erodu etc.

Currently transshipments are done at Colombo, Dubai & Singapore ports which cause time and money to the exporters. When the Vallarpadam International Container Terminal become operational, Cochin will be the hub in India for transhipment.

Rail Freight Corridor Project

The Central Government of India has approved setting up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the execution of dedicated Rail Freight Corridor Project. The SPV will be under the Railway Ministry.

Function of SPV will be setting up a dedicated freight corridor including those connecting other legs of the Golden Quadrilaterial and its diagonals. The SPV will execute the project that envisages building rail links along the Golden Quadrilateral routes. The freight corridor will run parallel to the existing railway lines connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkatta.

TAMIL NADU ALLOWS MOLASSES EXPORTS

Tamil Nadu has allowed export of Molasses after 5 years of gap. This is due to the mill-wise quote granted by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu. There will be an export of 1.13 lakh tonnes of molasses by private mills and Co-operative sector mills export 51,000 tonnes.


AIR SAHARA ADDING CHINA IN IT'S MAP

Air Sahara , India 's leading domestic and international airline, today announced its mega expansion plans in the domestic and international sector.

The airline will be adding 66 new Flights and 14 new destinations to its network within next four months thus creating aviation history in the country. It is the first time in the country that a private airline is introducing international flights to Dhaka , Guangzhou ( China ), Male ( Maldives ) and a direct daily flight from Delhi to Columbo.

Air India to fly with Star Alliance

Star Alliance, world’s largest airline group, currently runs 16,930 daily flights to 842 airports in 152 countries around the world will have another addition - Air India. This will give a boost to the Indian aviation. Air India already has an expansion plan by inducting more aircrafts in his family.

According to sources, the major benefits of the alliance for Air India would be a partnership with member airlines on issues like marketing and joint sourcing of spares and fuel which will lead to a huge saving of millions of dollars.

Jazeera Airways takes to Delhi & Mumbai

The new low-cost airline of Kuwait, Jazeera Airways has started flights to India. It fly six times to Mumbai and three times to Delhi a week. Moreover, Jazeera Airways will be starting flights to Hyderabad and Cochin soon.

Double-stack box train for Mundra Port

First train carrying double-stacked containers arrived at Mundra Port on July 2, 2006. from Kanakpura, Rajasthan. The train, which carried 131 containers ( 82 TEUs and 49 FEUs) This 857 km travel is described as a "historical journey" because the double stacked container trains will ease the congestion between Mundra Port and the north India.
