COLLISION
AT MUMBAI PORT
This
is to advise updates to our valued customer regarding
unfortunate collision incident taken place on 7th August
2010 at Mumbai Port, vessel MSC Chitra, a Panama Registered
container ship outbound from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port
& AL KHALIJIA-3 , a ST. Kitts & Nevis registered
cargo ship inbound to Mumbai Port Trust collided within
the Port limits of Mumbai Port Trust.
This has resulted in severe damage to MSC Chitra which
has run aground. The salvage operation is going on and
approx 400 containers are floating around the Channel.
Considering the above, all the Vessel movements, in
and out of Nhava Sheva Port have been cancelled from
Saturday midnight onwards (at Mumbai port and Nhava
Sheva Port).

Chennai airport registers 24% in cargo handling growth
With buoyancy in exports, the Chennai airport registered a 24 per cent growth in cargo handled in the first five months of the calendar year over the same period last year. It handled 1,13,515 tonnes of cargo between January 1 and May 31 compared with 91,251 tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
Export increased 29 per cent to 61,282 tonnes between January 1 and May 31 as compared with 47,334 tonnes in the same period last year. Import during the period increased by 19 per cent to 52,233 tonnes (43,917 tonnes).
The export growth was mainly due to increased handling of electronics/electrical and engineering goods/spare parts.
The construction of Integrated Cargo Complex (Phase-III) is under progress with an area of 29,500 sq m With the new system in place cargo handling will increase to 6 lakh tonnes from the existing 2.5 lakh tonnes.
Currently, nearly 30 cargo airlines operate from the Chennai airport with 14 exclusive cargo freighters. Some of the products handled include electronics, electrical, engineering goods, textiles and garments machinery, leather and leather products.
Tuticorin port records increase in throughput
Tuticorin Port is steadily increasing its throughput and as of date, the port has handled nine million tonnes and 1.6 lakh TEUs in container handling during the financial year 2010-11, registering an increase of 1.80 per cent,.
Vallarpadam terminal
Connectivity nearing completion:Construction work in progress at Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) in Kochi. The first phase of the ICTT is scheduled to be operational shortly. The various projects taken up by the Kochi port under the National Maritime Development Plan are progressing according to schedule.
